Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) practices in an advanced role in a defined population. Through advanced nursing knowledge, this individual is responsible for the development and application of high standards and research to enhance the quality of care in the assigned areas. Functions autonomously and in collaboration with health care providers as an expert clinical practitioner, researcher, consultant, leader and educator. Assesses patient/family and staff educational needs and implements learning modalities to meet these needs. Develops, teaches, coordinates and evaluates education programs in collaboration with other educators/managers.

Job Functions:

Clinical
• Advances nursing practice by modeling theory of evidence based practice
• Utilizes advanced knowledge to manage complex patient care needs (such as psychological, pathophysiology and sociocultural)
• Anticipates and evaluates technological, economical, social and environmental factors to facilitate efficient/effective health care delivery for optimal patient outcomes
• Utilizes sound judgment in problem-solving within expected time frames
• Leads/participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards/policies/procedures within the defined population
• Serves as a clinical/educational resource to bedside care team for optimal patient outcomes
• Identifies patients at risk, assists in preventing complications and contributes to developing and sustaining a culture of safety
• Continues to develop knowledge base and skills to model efficient, quality nursing care
• Provides direction and support to the patient and family by serving as their advocate
• Participates/leads quality initiatives
• Collaborates with physicians and other patient care providers to improve patient care within an interdisciplinary model

Education
• Facilitates the acquisition and application of clinical knowledge, theoretical knowledge and decision-making skills by nurses and nursing personnel, including students
• Facilitates the orientation of new patient-care staff following their orientation in the Center for Nursing Education and Research; uses Career Path, PBDS outcomes, other prescriptive recommendations of the CNER educator and appropriate clinical assignments with follow-up
• Builds a positive environment for learning and practicing in collaboration with Service Line Educators/Managers
• Conducts necessary educational needs assessment and follows with appropriate professional development in collaboration with other educators
• Contributes to nursing knowledge through publications and presentations both locally and nationally
• Teaches in appropriate programs, including internships, orientation, CE programs and other events
• Assists and promotes the integration of new knowledge in the clinical setting/care of patients

Research
• Expands the scientific base of nursing practice by utilizing, facilitating and conducting nursing research
• Identifies researchable topics in area of practice, designs and conducts this research and integrates where appropriate
• Conducts formal and informal research that will meet identified patient outcomes
• Mentors others in conducting legal and ethical research
• Presents and publishes research findings
• Disseminates recent innovations and research findings, both internal and external, to the practice in defined area

Consultation
• Utilizes nursing expertise and education to provide consultation services to management and all levels of patient care providers to improve quality patient care (ex: product evaluation, new technology and new care delivery models).
• Leads projects that affect practice area
• Instills value for professional nursing practice through BUMC

Management
• Collaborates with management to resolve clinical and professional issues, such as competency of staff and practice trends
• Provides feedback to management on staff performance evaluations
• Evaluates the clinical outcomes of nursing practices and environmental conditions
• Contributes to the financial integrity of the department by implementing cost-effective practices
• Participates in BUMC planning and decision-making to actualize the scope of the CNS role

Requirements
Qualified candidates must have a TX RN license, CNS certification recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing, BSN or MSN and five years of Oncology nursing experience. Candidates must have or be willing to obtain within first year the following certifications: OCN and ONS Chemo/Biotherapy Certified Trainer.
