The Coalition for Nurses in Advanced Practice is a Texas state-based organization that represents all four advanced practice roles—Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Anesthetists, and Nurse Midwives. We have been a member for several years and through our membership, have access to a professional lobbyist and health policy expert.
The National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) at nacns.org This is the national voice for Clinical Nurse Specialists and our representative at all the important tables at the national scene. This is an extremely critical time for us to be represented at the national level. Please consider also joining NACNS. Individual membership dues are $110/year, students $65/year.
The American Nurses Association, has been a consistent supporter of CNS practice and education and represents the voice of nursing nationally and internationally.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center is one of the major certification providers for Clinical Nurse Specialists.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, is comprised of Deans from Schools of Nursing. Their website has a 2006 position paper in support of Clinical Nurse Specialists. They also have an excellent compilation of letters sent to NCSBN in opposition of the “Vision Paper” draft.
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing is a non-regulatory body comprised of representatives of all of the individual state boards of nursing. They have an Advanced Practice Committee who recently proposed the draft paper that has receive strong opposition from the nursing community. The NCSBN does not have the ability to regulate but has influence on individual state boards representatives.
The Texas Board of Nursing provides regulation of advanced practice nursing and nursing in general in Texas. They have an APN Committee with two CNS representatives—one for CNS practice and one for CNS education. We are pleased to announce that the BON has added a Texas Clinical Nurse Specialists representative as a standing member of the APN Committee!
