Creative Teaching Strategies

Research Poster Presentation: Each student prepares a poster presentation of their research proposal using UTPA Library Media Resources and guidance from required readings. Posters are displayed at the College of Health Sciences and Human Services Research Day. (Submitted by UT-Pan Am- Dr. Janice Maville)

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Change Project assignment is designed to facilitate synthesis and analysis of the role of the advanced practice nurse in the initiation of change directed in the improvement of quality of care. Students, in collaboration with preceptors, will identify an area of needed change in a health care facility or professional practice. The student will plan, implement, and evaluate a project directed to effect the desired change.(Course:NURS 6342 Adult Health II (CNS).

Students participate in a community health promotion project where over 300 university faculty and staff have blood drawn for Chem 26, glucose, CRP, etc. and provide individual results interpretation along with a written health promotion plan. (Course: NURS 6310 Health Promotion (CNS).

Students plan and implement a group health promotion project for groups of 3rd grade students on an area of health promotion suitable for that age group. Promoting nursing as a profession to these students is emphasized. (Course: NURS 6310 Health Promotion (CNS)-Submitted by _______).

Develop evidence-based practice model, EBP guidelines, or education project that is developed after a needs assessment with the agency/preceptor. (Submitted by Angela Clark-UT Austin). Capstone presentations to peers, agencies, faculty.

Select 2 of the current JACHO patient safety goals specific to the student’s patient population and address specifics on how they could be accomplished

Develop modules for pharmacotherapeutics

Health Care Literacy Project: Students view a CD-ROM on Health care Literacy created by the Institute of Medicine to familiarize them with this phenomenon. They identify a problem related to low health literacy in a clinical area of their choice & develop a strategy/intervention (intervention must reflect the role of the CNS) to address it complete with identification of a measurable outcome[s] to evaluate the effectiveness of their plan. (Submitted by Susan Wilkinson, Angelo State University).

Case Presentation in Adult Health III (3rd of 3 clinical courses)

Relevance of patient problems to course objectives; Summary of case: history, reason/s for hospitalization, problem list, presence of nursing-sensitive indicators

Assessment, diagnostic test results; Makes recommendations for additional tests if necessary, considering sensitivity, specificity, cost & risk benefit ratio; Management plan; Research-based approach; Provides the level of evidence described in the guidelines or type of study design in the research articles; Spheres of influence and CNS competencies relative to case; Provides examples of the 7 competencies of the CNS role required in the case example. (Submitted by Jan Foster – Texas Woman’s University- Houston Center).

Integrate EBP assignments in every course, thus threading EBP across the curriculum. (Submitted by Kathy Baldwin-TCU).

Have adapted all didactic assignments to the online environment, using threaded discussions as a major means to cement concepts. (Submitted by Kathy Baldwin-TCU).

Have developed clinical practica in rural Texas, as well as out of state for students in our online program. (Submitted by Kathy Baldwin-TCU).

All CNS didactic and clinical courses designed around the three CNS spheres of influence. (Submitted by Kathy Baldwin-TCU).
