Position Description

In collaboration with and under the direction of the Wesley Spectrum Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will perform acts of medical diagnosis or prescription of medical therapeutic or corrective measures within the agency and at off-site locations. The Nurse Practitioner will be dedicated to integrating physical and behavioral health services within Wesley Spectrum and with specified Partner Agencies. The NP will be integral in the development, design, management and growth of Wesley Spectrum's Physical and Behavioral Health programs, policies and partnerships. The NP is accountable for the quality and effectiveness of the services offered to patients and represents Wesley Spectrum as a leader in the organization and in the community.

The NP will work with the Wesley Spectrum Medical Director, who will be designated as the supervising physician for the purpose of CRNP licensure and prescriptive authority. The NP will need to have prescriptive authority, including DEA licensure for this position.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

  • Masters in Nursing from an accredited university or school of nursing.
  • Doctorate preferred.
  • Psychiatric focus preferred


  • 7 years nursing experience as a pediatric and psychiatric mental health nurse

Licenses, Certifications & Clearances:

  • Licensed in PA as RN
  • Licensed as Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner
  • State and FBI criminal background clearances
  • Act 33 & 34 clearances
  • Valid PA drivers' license
  • Accessibility to motor vehicle with appropriate vehicle/liability insurance coverage
  • Ability to obtain third party insurance credentialing
  • DEA Licensure

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to standards and procedures set forth in collaborative agreement with Medical Director/Physician.
  2. In consult with the Medical Director/Physician, provide advanced nursing care and treatment to patients, including: physical and behavioral health evaluations, diagnosis, mental status exams, medication management, consultation to staff and families, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, developing treatment plans, and prescribing drugs or other therapies.
  3. Partners with child, adolescents, parents and/or adults as consumers by providing education concerning diagnoses, medication, treatment options and recommendations
  4. Evaluates mental health issues in conjunction with physical health by use of BMI height weight medical and family history and other data as appropriate
  5. Collaborates with other treatment providers and insurance providers to ensure continuity of care
  6. Uses electronic medical record and e prescriber to complete required documents
  7. Participate in leadership and administrative meetings in the program as requested.
  8. Maintain current information on file with the Wesley Spectrum Human Resources, including medical licenses, DEA licenses, and evidence of malpractice insurance, clearances and other information as requested.
  9. Conduct routine screening for behavioral health problems in a primary care setting, making appropriate referrals for continuing behavioral health care and services
  10. Engage in routine exchange of information representing all Wesley Spectrum Services in primary care setting, bridging cultural differences.
  11. Work with interdisciplinary team, integrating behavioral and physical health elements of a treatment approach.
  12. Consult between behavioral health and physical health providers to increase the awareness and education of both groups
  13. Develop behavioral and physical health initiatives and partnerships as a representative of Wesley Spectrum Services
  14. Maintain an awareness of and an adherence to all privacy regulations and laws
  15. Participate in the development, interpretation and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards of nursing practices
  16. Maintain relationships with funders and community partners and represent Wesley Spectrum in the stakeholder community as requested
  17. Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines
  18. Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized
  19. Educate and guide patients in preventative care, self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patient's individual circumstances
  20. Act in compliance with nursing licensure regulations and best practices; including maintenance of complete, accurate and timely medical records
  21. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting and follow-up of contagious diseases

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and the awareness of appropriate situations to seek guidance or supervision
  • Ability to create therapeutic alliance with patient and their families and facilitate the development of trust with the larger treatment team
  • Knowledge and expertise in treatment protocols integrating psychotropic medications into a comprehensive treatment plan
  • Ability to provide parent and staff education on psychiatric diagnosis, current and proposed psychiatric medication and additional methods of self management.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in activities related to the promotion, coordination and facilitation of treatment and recovery within a team model of service delivery
  • Ability to engage in clinical performance and improvement activities and use data to improve practice
  • Ability to create therapeutic alliance with patient and their families and facilitate the development of trust with the larger treatment team
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries and diseases. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventative health-care measures
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Ability to work with children and adolescents and effectively interact with their caregivers
  • Knowledgeable in biological, pharmacological, social and behavioral sciences relevant to adult, child and adolescent psychiatric nursing.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations relative to behavioral and physical health
  • Critical observation, assessment and reporting skills
  • Knowledge of available community resources for incorporation into the service plan
