DEA and HHS Extend Telemedicine Flexibilities through 2025

New Jersey Palliative Care Advanced Practice Nurse Consortium

In 2023, the DEA and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) extended current telemedicine flexibilities through the end of 2024. These exceptions allowed for the prescribing of controlled medications via telemedicine encounters even when the prescribing practitioner had not conducted an in-person medical evaluation of the patient. The DEA and HHS have jointly extended the current telemedicine flexibilities through December 31, 2025.

The details of this extension, titled “Third Temporary Extension of COVID-19 Telemedicine Flexibilities for Prescription of Controlled Medications,” were submitted to the Federal Register on November 15, 2024.
