Amy Bearden is a pediatric optometrist and is very interested in talking to primary care providers about kids eye exams and more specifically a condition called convergence insufficiency. Convergence insufficiency is a common binocular vision problem (inability to use the eyes together) that can have a significant impact on kids reading and academic performance. The condition affects about 5% of the population and causes many learning problems for kids that very closely mimic ADD/ADHD. This condition has been in the lime light in the last few years for two major studies; one by a pediatric ophthalmologist and one through the National Eye Institute that has changed current guidelines on diagnosing and managing kids with or suspected to have ADD/ADHD.
