The Delta Beta Chapter At Large

Delta Beta at Large, Sigma Theta Tau International, has been invited to participate in a special service project with the USF Health Service Corps.

The Great American Teach In is an opportunity to join students from USF health nursing, medicine, public health and physical therapy who volunteer in the local public schools during the Great American Teach In week from Monday Nov. 16 – Friday Nov. 20, 2009. This is a wonderful opportunity for nurses to share their knowledge, passion, and dedication to our profession with students in grades K-12!  You can bring in your favorite show and tell items, e.g. your stethoscope etc., and talk to students about what you do as a nursing professional, why you like nursing, what it takes to be a nurse, and the many opportunities in nursing. You may also wish to lead the elementary school children in an activity, e.g. teaching them about hand washing, or brushing their teeth.

Delta Beta chapter members are encouraged to participate and will be able to sign up to teach at any of 3 schools in the Tampa Bay area.

1. Wiregrass Ranch High School in south Pasco County can accept volunteers the entire  week from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm daily.

2. Pizzo Elementary School - next to USF - can  accept volunteers from 8:00 am -2:00 pm on Nov 18th only.

3. Bloomingdale HS in the Brandon area can accept volunteers to speak to the CNA classes from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm on Nov.18th only.

If you are interested in this service opportunity, please contact Mrs. Ellen Kent, MPH (the USF Health Service Corps Coordinator) at ekent@health.usf.edu . Mrs. Kent will match you with a teacher/class at one of these schools at a date and time that’s convenient for you. Please specify in your email subject line that you are a Delta Beta member.  In the body of the email, please indicate the date/time and school that is most convenient for you. You can chose to teach just one class or multiple ones and can teach in pairs or groups if you have someone you’d like to invite to teach with you. Once Mrs. Kent receives your request, she will send you a confirmation within a few days with your assignment and contact information.

If you have any questions about this wonderful opportunity to serve your community and promote our profession, please contact Dr. Sandra Cadena at scadena@health.usf.edu .

Thank you for your service!
