Sarah Schoof has been Certified in Travel Health by the International Society of Travel Medicine and practicing the specialty in the Capital District since 2007.   She worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Kenya for 17 years, preparing Americans traveling all over Africa and to the rest of the world. She has been a Family Nurse Practitioner since 1978, and Board Certified since 2000. She spends 2 days a week providing services and coordinating the Free Clinic at the Capital City Rescue Mission in Albany, which is her other private practice.

Safari Health NP opened in April 2010 to provide Immunizations, Education and Prescriptions for Worldwide Travelers. Travel Health focuses on planning ahead with immunizations, information and prescriptions to reduce risk of disruptions from illnesses and injuries. An initial visit includes:

  • Assessment of medical and immunization history.
  • Personalized education on ways to keep healthy.
  • Individual folder of written materials.
  • Administration of vaccines, though the vaccines themselves are charged in addition.
  • Prescriptions for prevention of malaria and altitude illness, and treatment of traveler’s diarrhea.
  • Follow-up visits for vaccines.
  • Answering questions by phone prior to the trip.

Sarah keeps travel vaccinations for all ages and routine adult vaccinations on hand at all times. Evening and Saturday appointments are available.

She also does meetings for student, mission, touring, or volunteer service groups traveling. Topics included are specific vaccinations recommended and required, where to get vaccinations, food and water precautions, how to avoid malaria and other diseases from insect bites, as well as other risks specific to the destination and plan.

Sarah is a member of the Nurse Practitioners Association, International Society of Travel Medicine, and Christian Medical and Dental Association.
