NP Career Pathways: Non Traditional Practice Roles
Franklin Fru, DHA, MSN, APRN, ACNP-BC MSL
1.0 CE CreditThe Advanced Practice Nursing landscape is vast, with Nurse Practitioner Concentrations
leading the career pathways. The consensus is that a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is most likely a
caregiver from a Healthcare provider's stance. Yes, NPs are Healthcare Providers and most times
would be in clinical care settings or even remote in the case of Telemedicine. This means that NP
concentration with regard to Women`s Health, Neonatal Care, Acute Care, Psych/Mental Health
Care, Primary Care, Adult/Gerontology, and Pediatrics Care are all Clinicians.
At the ACANPUS Virtual Conference on August 23 rd , 2025, from 09 AM to 3:30 PM,
come discover and let us unpack other non-traditional NP careers like Medical Science Liaisons
(MSL) in both clinical and non-clinical settings. A Medical Science Liaison is a specific role that
typically reports to the medical affairs department within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology,
medical device, medical diagnostic, contract research organization, or other healthcare company.
MSLs typically have advanced scientific training and academic credentials usually consisting of
but not limited to a doctorate (PhD, PharmD, MD, DNP, DHA, etc.) in the life sciences with a
concentration in a specific therapeutic area such as, oncology, cardiology, CNS, pulmonary,
hematology, surgery, women's healthcare, etc., product, diagnostic, or disease state. MSLs may
have BPharm, MPharm, MS, MSc, NP, DNP, PA, or alternate advanced degrees, as well as
clinical expertise in relevant therapeutic areas.
Responsibilities include development and implementation of a medical engagement
strategic plan, which involves careful consideration of scientific engagement, insight gathering,
Key Opinion Leader (KOL) development, response to requests for medical information, and
additional opportunities for customer engagement. MSLs utilize their already gained clinical
background to enhance healthcare and public health outcomes. MSLs are in a unique position to
interact with clinical investigators with their deep knowledge of sciences, disease states, the
scientific mechanism of action, and the available clinical data to promote clinical and medical
best practices. The MSL serves as an educator for clinical peers (NPs, PAs, MDs, Laboratory,
Pharmacists, Researchers, etc), responsible for providing medical and scientific education and
expertise related to healthcare products such as medical devices, diagnostic solutions, and the
clinical application, utility, and medical impact of these solutions on patient care in both
acute/inpatient and outpatient settings. -

Telemedicine: Expanding Possibilities for Nurse Practitioners
Mirabelle Nofeh-Barche DNP, APRN FNP-BC
1.0 CE CreditWe are no longer imagining the future of healthcare we are standing in it. Telemedicine is
no longer an option. It’s a movement. A shift that is breaking down barriers between patient
and provider, between access and equity, between burnout and balance. As a Nurse
Practitioner and a telemedicine practice owner, I’ve witnessed how this technology isn't
here to replace our hands-on care, it’s here to expand it. It’s giving patients a voice. It’s
giving working parents a lifeline. It’s giving us as providers the space to thrive beyond the
limitations of brick-and-mortar care. This is the new frontier, with new possibilities. A space
where our clinical expertise meets innovation. Where we no longer ask, 'Can I do this?' but
instead declare, 'How far can I take this? I invite you to explore what this frontier means for
you not just as clinicians, but as visionaries. As business owners. As advocates.
Join me. Let’s talk about the impact. The opportunity. The power of presence even through a
screen. Because in this new frontier, the possibilities aren’t just ahead of us, they’re already
here and I can testify to that. Telemedicine is more than a platform. It’s a promise.
A promise that healthcare can reach the unreachable, that our time can be better valued,
and that patients can be seen, heard, and healed beyond four walls.
As nurse practitioners, we are not just adapting to change we are leading it. This is our
moment to dream, to disrupt, and to deliver care in ways we once thought impossible.
I challenge you to step into this new frontier not with fear, but with boldness.
Because the future of healthcare needs exactly what you bring to the table, clinical
excellence, and human connection, and now, technological courage.
I am looking forward to spend time with you all
Thank you and let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. -

The Paths Less Travelled: NP's in Neurology
Juliana Atem, DNP ACNP-AG
1.0 CE Credit"Nurse Practitioners in Neurology: The Path Less Traveled"
Neurology is one of medicine’s most complex and fascinating frontiers—and yet, it remains one of the least explored by nurse practitioners.
Why don’t more NPs choose neurology? Is it the complexity… or the unknown?
Join me as we explore how NPs are breaking barriers, transforming care, and making a powerful impact in one of medicine’s most complex specialties. NPs are not only capable of thriving in neurology but are essential to its future.
It’s not the easiest path—but it just might be the most rewarding! -
2:30pm - 3:30pm
Psychodermatology: The Skin brain interconnection
Asongtia Ntonghawah, DNP FNP-BC, PMHNP BC
Psychodermatology is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interaction between the mind and the skin, emphasizing how psychological factors influence dermatologic conditions and vice versa. In her presentation, Dr. Asongtia Ntonghawah highlights the bidirectional communication between the skin and brain through neuroendocrine, immune, and sensory pathways, known collectively as the neuro-immuno-cutaneous system. This connection explains how emotional states such as stress, anxiety, or trauma can trigger or worsen various skin disorders.
