Job Description

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Reviews abnormal laboratory reports and follows-up on all abnormal and panic labs as defined by the Medical Director and the Department of Medicine.
• Reviews physician documentation to assess action taken by primary care providers and provides follow-up for non-compliant patients.
• Requests appropriate screening and diagnostic tests.
• Makes appropriate referrals to the Emergency Room, other health providers, and specialists as needed.
• Prescribes medication according to protocol.
• Maintains appropriate communication with the collaborating physicians regarding issues of abnormal labs and their follow-up.
• Prepares appropriate documentation for all the above activities. Collaborating with physicians and nursing staff in a timely manner.
• Educates patients on non-compliance as it relates to management of their plan of care.
• Reports to the Section Chief and/or Assistant Section Chief in the Department of Medicine.
• Also reports to Chief of Pediatrics for Specialty assigned duties.
• Collaborates with the Sr. Associate Executive Director of Nursing regarding Nursing Research issues and participates in the preparation of Magnet Program.
• Participates in the performance improvement activities as it relates to abnormal labs, Pediatric Specialty, and/or Nursing Research.
• Works directly and in collaboration with all Internist in resolving issues related to their patient-specific treatment and follow-up.
• Identifies safety and health hazards and works collaboratively with other departments to ameliorate those conditions.
• Acts as a patient advocate in the access of care.
• Meets and reports to (written and verbal) the Medical Director, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Pediatrics, and the Sr. Associate Director of Nursing.
• Maintains a level of cultural competence.
• Knowledge of interpersonal/team building methods.
• To be aware of the population specific patient management for the area which they work.
• Understands policy and procedure related to Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
• Knowledge of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) patient safety.
