Position Description

Job Description

The Division of Pain and Palliative Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Connecticut Children’s is seeking an AP Provider to join the team. This division has active inpatient acute pain consultation and palliative medicine services, and the only chronic pain clinic in Connecticut.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessment of patients by taking problem-oriented histories as they relate to issues of pain and quality of life needs and perform physical examinations, incorporating all relevant clinical data including laboratory and diagnostic data.
  • Develop, in collaboration with pediatric providers, a problem-oriented plan for diagnostic, therapeutic and medication modalities relevant to pediatric pain palliative patients
  • Prescribe medications including controlled substances, devices and other medications within CT and Federal scope of practice law for nurse practitioners.
  • Perform and/or assist with approved procedures, including administration of botox and peripheral nerve blocks
  • Conduct appropriate follow-up of patients as needed
  • Provide education to pediatric pain and palliative patients and their families regarding treatment
  • Assist providers in education and training of house staff
  • Perform assessment and risk stratification for nursing staff
  • Review available medical records and request additional clinical information including medical record, consultation notes, laboratory data, as needed


Qualifications

Minimum education (degree/type of degree).

  • Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner: Graduate degree in nursing accredited by one of the national certifying bodies in nursing. (Or, on or before December 31, 2004, completion of an advanced nurse practitioner program recognized by a national certifying body for certification as a nurse practitioner.)


Or…

  • Physician Assistant: Graduation from a physician assistant program accredited, at the time of graduation, by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

License and/or Certification

Required:

At time of hire and maintenance at time of appointment or privilege approval:

  • Provider licensing:
    • Current State of Connecticut (Pediatric) Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure. OR…
    • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, Inc. (NCCPA). Current State of Connecticut Physician Assistant licensure.


Additionally:

  • Depending on privileges for role, Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification may be required.
  • Depending on privileges for role, federal DEA and CT controlled substance registration may be required.
  • Certain specialties may require additional certifications.
