Summary:
- The Thoracic Surgery team at HUP is part of the Department of Surgery and provides care to patients undergoing diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the thymus gland, lungs, esophagus and trachea.
- These patients are often undergoing elective surgery to both diagnose and treat numerous conditions including complex lung or esophageal cancers, myasthenia gravis, or possibly a benign structural disorder in the chest.
- As an NP/PA on this service you will be part of a high functioning inter-professional team who is responsible for the management of complex and critically ill thoracic surgery patients.
- Responsibilities for the NP/PA who joins our team will include inpatient management, clinical decision making, procedures according to credentialing, complex discharge planning and transitions in care, care coordination, team collaboration, and education of patients, family and staff. In addition, the provider will participate in educational activities, research as applicable, ensure regulatory compliance, document care according to standards, and prescribe in accordance with their collaborative agreement and State regulations.
- The NP/PA, will provide quality care across the continuum in collaboration with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing staff, and other members of the care team, and be expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of their professional practice.
- All nurse practitioners and physician Assistants function under the guidelines designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body.
- The PA or CRNP hired will be held accountable through a formal job description, the delineation of privileges, and their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement.
- In addition to clinical responsibilities, the role also involves participation in the Department’s Quality Improvement initiatives and Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL).
- Opportunities for professional growth and development are available through research, lecturing, publications, and involvement with departmental and hospital projects and committees.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association required.
- Certified Nurse Practitioner PA (Required) or Masters Prepared Physician Assistant
- CRNP licensure (CRNP) or PA-C in state of PA required
- Prescriptive Authority (Required)
- PA RN licensure (RN) required. National Board Certification.
- Master of Arts or Science (Required)
- The CRNP must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board. Education Specialization: Master's Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Masters Physician Assistant - required
- Pennsylvania State License - required
- At least 2 years of inpatient advanced practice experience is preferred
