Department Overview
Doernbecher PeriAnesthesia is dedicated to fostering a professional practice environment with a strong focus on role and relationship competence. This fast-paced, patient- and family-centered department provides care for pediatric patients from neonates to young adults, including ambulatory and inpatient surgeries, urgent/emergent procedures, after-hours sedation, and prolonged procedural recoveries. RNs work in a collaborative environment, maintaining positive collegial relationships with all interdisciplinary team members.
Function/Duties of Position
The RN provides care consistent with ASPAN standards and evidence-based practice. The RN is responsible for participating in the growth of the nursing profession and continuous improvement to achieve best practice in our unit to increase the value of care we provide to our patients and families.
We provide fast-paced, patient and family-centered, pediatric PeriAnesthesia care. Pediatric patient populations range from neonates to young adults and include ambulatory, inpatient, urgent/emergent surgeries, after hour’s sedation and prolonged procedural recoveries. Positive collegial relationships with all interdisciplinary team members.
The PeriAnesthesia unit is staffed Monday to Friday from 0600 to 2230. Shift start times and lengths are variable. RN staff are required to take call for surgeries after hours, holidays and weekends based on the unit rotation. RNs provide pre- and post-anesthesia care.

Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in Pediatric PeriAnesthesia (pre-op, Phase I & II recovery); Current experience in a tertiary hospital setting
- Minimum of 2 years Pediatric Sedation, Pediatric Intensive Care, Emergency Department and/or Pediatric Phase I recovery current experience from a tertiary hospital setting
- BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
- ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
- Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
- Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
- BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and must not expire during orientation
- PALS certification required upon hire.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
- Specialty Certification specific to perianesthesia, critical or pediatric care.
- Peripheral IV skills with all age groups.
- Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse
- External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
- Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
