Position Description

The NP will work collaboratively with other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), residents, and spine surgeons within the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The NP will be expected to provide outstanding care to patients in the surgical and outpatient settings.  Clinical duties include seeing new, return, and post-operative patients in addition to preforming preoperative physical examinations. No call is expected with this role.  

Position Responsibilities

  • The APP will be expected to deliver excellent care, preform and interpret diagnostic testing (X-rays, advanced imaging, labs), perform injections, and prescribe, dispense, or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement.
  • It is expected that the APP shows a willingness to learn, collaborate with a team, and provide cross coverage for the team when needed.
  • The APP is expected to serve as backup first surgical assist when other APPs are unavailable. This requires the ability to learn suturing and closing techniques, sterile procedures, and appropriate operating room practices.
  • Supervise the care delivered. Perform /order medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement. Consult/collaborate with other care team members. Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues. Influence others to adopt best practices.
  • Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes. Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
  • Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents. Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
  • Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care. Initiate corrective action as needed. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations. Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications. May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of specialized care. Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff. Assist with identification and implementation of process improvement projects and service line advancements in order to improve patient outcomes and decrease complications. Assist with implementation of methods to capture appropriate billing/coding documentation in the EMR.

Qualifications - External

Educational Requirements: 

ARNP: A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree or DNP in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required. Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

Experience Required:

  • 1-3 years of patient care experience gained through education, job experience, or rotations is required
  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of orthopedic patient care is required
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of background and perspectives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Experience: 

  • Experience working with spine patients
  • Experience working in medical-surgical inpatient, surgical inpatient, orthopedic inpatient, or orthopedic surgical setting is highly desired
