The Division of Neurocritical Care (NCC), in collaboration with the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU), provides comprehensive, compassionate, and technologically advanced patient- and family-centered care including the most advanced diagnostics and treatments, education of future leaders in the field, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research to develop new therapies.

Under the direction of the Associate Medical Director and the Nursing Director of Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and NCC division leadership, the Neuro ICU APP (can be Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) is accountable for the delivery of consistent, high quality patient care.

This position is 3-13 hour shifts, day/night rotation and a weekend requirement

The Neuro ICU APP develops, implements, and evaluates a program of specialized health care for a select patient population. Promotes a collaborative relationship and effort between the medical staff and professional nurses toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice.

Education/Degree for an APP

  • Master’s or Doctor of Nursing from an accredited nursing program or Master's Degree for Physician Assistant

Licensure, Certifications, or Registration for an APP

  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner granted by a Board recognized certifying organization or certification as a Physician Assistant
  • Prescriptive authority for controlled substances in MA (MCSR)
  • DEA registration for controlled substances

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures

Master's Degree Nursing required

Registered Nurse [RN - State License]

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse [APRN] [MA] preferred

Experience

Experience as a nurse practitioner 0-1 year preferred

  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
