Position Description

Overview of Role

Join a 12-bed, high-dependency care unit primarily operated by Advanced Practice Providers, supported by a critical care physician and specialty trainee. In this collaborative environment, you’ll be a vital part of the frontline clinical team, overseeing the full scope of treatment for individuals facing complex and severe conditions, such as:

  • Upper or lower GI hemorrhage
  • Severe insulin-related metabolic imbalances
  • Circulatory insufficiency (e.g., infectious, cardiac, or mixed origin)
  • Failure of multiple organ systems
  • Respiratory compromise requiring oxygenation or ventilation support
  • Cases involving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), utilized either for temporary stabilization or pre-transplant preparation, overseen by a dedicated ECMO physician

Schedule Format

Daytime Hours (7 AM – 7 PM):

  • Partner with 2–3 advanced practice colleagues, one supervising physician, and a pulmonary fellow
  • Responsible for direct oversight of up to four patients; provide support for additional cases depending on clinical need

Overnight Hours (7 PM – 7 AM):

  • Paired with one other NP and an attending available onsite (with intermittent fellow support)
  • Oversee all individuals admitted to the unit (total of 12), in addition to handling new cases and urgent interventions, with attending guidance available as needed

Primary Duties

  • Deliver full-spectrum critical care for unit patients
  • Participate in multidisciplinary bedside discussions
  • Handle admissions, including documentation and order sets
  • Escort patients to off-unit diagnostics or interventional appointments
  • Serve as liaison for specialists and relatives
  • Write and update clinical progress documentation and transfer briefs
  • Conduct bedside procedures (with attending supervision as necessary), such as:
  • Arterial and central vascular access
  • Fluid drainage from abdominal cavity
  • Diagnostic spinal tap
