Position Description

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a Mid-level healthcare provider who works collaboratively with the designated physician and is responsible for focused immediate care to a specific group of patients.  The Advanced Practice Nurse assesses patients for minor illnesses and injuries across the lifespan, determines diagnosis and treatment plans, and educates patients and their families on diagnoses, prevention of health problems/complications. The Advanced Practice Nurse seeks opportunities for professional growth through participation in continuing education and staff development programs.  APN responsibilities must be accomplished within the guidelines of the institution as developed in collaboration with the physician and administrators.

 

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities

           

  • Understands and follows RCH’s Standards of Excellence document.
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner. 
  • Displays respect and dignity to patient family members, visitors, and staff.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Upholds hospital policies and maintains a code of confidentiality on all patient information.
  • Contributes to departmental efficiency (i.e., cost, schedule, quality, etc.).
  • Follows facility resource plans (i.e., human, supplies, equipment, etc.).
  • Effectively uses time and sets priorities to meet the demands of the position.
  • Make timely and effective decisions.
  • Recognizes symptoms of problems, reviews the facts, and determines causes and potential consequences of the problems.
  • Anticipates emergency situations, establishes priorities, and takes corrective action.
  • Apply the approved guidelines to formulate the appropriate differential diagnosis based on the history, physical exam, and clinical findings.
  • Utilizes the electronic health record and accurately documents patient status/care, and ordering of ancillary services.
  • Accountable for patient charges.
  • Provides for referral, transfer, or discharge of patients to the appropriate level of care and provider.
  • Works and interacts effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrate stability under pressure by maintaining composure and satisfying requirements under stressful circumstances.
  • Does not abuse sick time or personal absence and provides proper notification for absence or tardiness.
  • Leads by example, demonstrating principled leadership and sound hospital practices.
  • Motivates by promoting mutual ownership of ideas and actions.
  • Focuses on satisfying patients/patient families through feedback and striving to improve work processes.
  • Interprets the role of APNs to individuals, families, and other professionals.
  • Maintains a cooperative and positive approach to reach agreed goals.
  • Consistently carry out all work assignments through to completion.
  • Is self-directed in appropriate job responsibilities.
  • Observes hospital dress code and wears identification/name badge.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures (fire, evacuation, and internal/external disaster plans/procedures).
  • Demonstrates appropriate handling of emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Maintains assigned equipment, reports malfunctions, and orders service as necessary.
  • Willing to expand professional knowledge and maintain a current clinical practice.
  • Inform department manager/administration of areas of concern in clinical areas.
  •  Facilitates interdepartmental approach to investigate concerns, develop solutions, and evaluate solutions.
  •  Involved in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health rules and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such as hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Education/Experience

  • Active RN and APRN certification and licensure including prescriptive authority in Illinois.
  • Masters or Doctorate designation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Must be BLS certified. ACLS and PALS preferred.
  • Two (2) years of related clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health and able to work under pressure.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to operate designated computer equipment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Aptitude for calculating correct medication doses.

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently exposed to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain at-risk patient care activities.
  • The work of this position is performed in an environmentally controlled office environment.
  • The position requires the ability to work under pressure and with a diverse population, including staff, physicians, clients, patients, and other members of the public on a regular basis.
  • The position may cause frequent exposure to communicable disease, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, cleaning fluids, and other conditions common to the healthcare environment.
  • Constant kneeling, stooping, bending, twisting and occasional need to life patients.
  • Minimal lifting not more than 50 lbs. with assistance, assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of object weighing up to 25 lbs.
