Job Summary
The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) is a specialized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse responsible for delivering comprehensive cancer care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In collaboration with supervising physicians, the ONP manages hematology-oncology patients using established treatment protocols. This role requires clinical expertise, strong communication, and the ability to operate in a dynamic environment addressing a broad spectrum of patient needs—from primary care to complex chemotherapy side effect management.

Job Summary
The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) is a specialized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse responsible for delivering comprehensive cancer care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In collaboration with supervising physicians, the ONP manages hematology-oncology patients using established treatment protocols. This role requires clinical expertise, strong communication, and the ability to operate in a dynamic environment addressing a broad spectrum of patient needs—from primary care to complex chemotherapy side effect management.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
- Triage calls from patients, physicians, hospitals, and home health/hospice agencies
- Evaluate and treat acute conditions, including oncologic emergencies and chemotherapy-related side effects
- Conduct histories, physical exams, diagnostic assessments, and initiate treatment plans
- Follow established care plans for oncology and hematology patients
- Identify environmental and personal health risks; incorporate cultural, economic, and resource factors into care planning
- Coordinate with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary teams to provide holistic care
- Conduct routine follow-up exams and adjust care plans as needed
- Refer patients to appropriate services when care exceeds scope
- Provide chemotherapy education to patients and families
- Educate office staff as needed
- Collaborate with physicians to develop and review medical protocols
- Serve as a resource for staff and participate in oncology-related committees (e.g., Commission on Cancer, Pharmacy and Therapeutics)
- Assist with chemotherapy preparation, administration, and supervision
- Support office-based medical procedures
- Provide first-call coverage and participate in hospital rounds
- Serve as inpatient point-of-contact for the oncology team
- Respond to infusion-related emergencies or adverse reactions in the infusion center
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient history, assessments, and care plans
- Monitor medical records for completeness and accuracy
- Conduct periodic reviews of policies and procedures
- Adhere to safety standards and complete required annual education
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Education: Meets licensure and certification standards; no specific degree required
- Experience: No minimum experience required
- Licensure/Certification:
- Certification by ANA or AANP as Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Must meet Tennessee state requirements for Nurse Practitioners
- Oncology Nursing Society certification preferred
- Physical Requirements: Type A (per internal standards)
