Job Description: Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner (Outpatient)
Location: Manhattan
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
Salary Range: $130,000–$160,000
Position Summary
A major NYC health system is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner to join its outpatient cardiothoracic surgery team. This role centers on evaluating and supporting patients throughout their surgical journey, with a focus on thorough pre-operative assessments, structured post-operative follow-up, and seamless coordination of care alongside a distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon and a multidisciplinary team.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive clinical evaluations that include medical, surgical, and psychosocial histories, conducting detailed examinations and documenting relevant findings.
- Develop individualized care plans that reflect patient needs, anticipated recovery, and ongoing health maintenance.
- Order diagnostic tests—including laboratory work and imaging—and interpret the results to guide patient care and differential assessments.
- Prepare patients for surgery by completing pre-operative requirements, screening tasks, consult reviews, and ensuring necessary authorizations are in place.
- Participate in both outpatient visits and occasional inpatient consults to support continuity of care.
- Coordinate the flow of patient care activities, including teaching, counseling, transition planning, and delegation of tasks to appropriate team members.
- Work collaboratively with physicians and other clinicians to maintain high standards of practice, participate in care planning, and address patient concerns.
- Facilitate patient transfers, hospital admissions, and discharges when needed, ensuring that necessary services and follow-up arrangements are completed.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and incorporate new clinical insights or research findings into everyday patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical record documentation and collaborate on periodic chart reviews with supervising physicians.
- Contribute to a safe and supportive clinical environment for patients, caregivers, students, and staff.
- Assist with implementing and upholding practice policies and procedures related to the cardiothoracic surgery program.
- Provide additional clinical or operational support as needed to uphold high standards of service within the division.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Nursing and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- At least five years of clinical experience in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, or a related surgical specialty.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a panel of complex patients and perform detailed history and physical examinations.
Licensure & Certifications
- Active NYS Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) licenses.
- National NP certification (ANCC or AANP).
- Current BLS certification; ACLS strong preference.
- Eligible for (or holder of) a New York State DEA registration.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with EMR systems and intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong clinical reasoning, organizational abilities, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multi-provider surgical team and manage responsibilities independently.
- Commitment to delivering patient-centered, safe, and evidence-informed care.
