New Guidelines on Community Acquired Pneumonia

Fort Lauderdale, FL
The South Florida Council of Advanced Practice Nurses

There is an important new guideline for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia. The new guideline recommends amoxicillin 1 gram TID for no less than 5 days for healthy outpatients without comorbidities - this is a major change from the previously recommended macrolide.  Amoxicillin is now the first choice, with doxycycline remaining second - macrolide down in third place and only if local resistance is under 25%.  Treatment for outpatients with comorbidities is the same.
