From The NPA Insights:

NP Shortage?

A recent survey conducted by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) found that the nurse practitioner vacancy rate nearly doubled to 11.4% in 2012 from 6% in 2011. In addition, 48% of upstate New York respondents reported that both NPs and PAs were very difficult to recruit. "A majority of survey respondents indicated that they anticipate growth both in their outpatient and ambulatory care service areas, and many indicate that this would require more NPs and PAs, so an increase in vacancy rates for these professions could result in significant shortages."

Summer Legislative Update:

On July 31st, 2013, Governor Cuomo signed bills A7324A/S4881A which allows nurse practitioners to write non-specific patient orders for meningococcal vaccines to be administered by registered pharmacists. Up until now, only physicians could write a non-specific patient order for pharmacists. The new law takes effect 90 days from the bill signing, which is October 29, 2013.
